A periodontist is a dentist who focuses on gum issues, specifically severe gum disease and oral inflammation. Periodontal disease is a serious infection that damages the gums and also harms the jawbone and tissue around teeth. What periodontists will do is provide treatment for the most severe of gum issues. These treatments include scaling and root planning, which target the infection on the root of your teeth. They also will provide surgical treatments, such as the removal of damaged tissue. The goal is to treat and prevent periodontal disease, as well as support the jaw and gums for the placement of new dental implants.
